Which type of stylus should I choose?
Overview of stylus selection :
• Try to choose a short stylus, the shorter the stylus, the harder the accuracy will be.
• Choose the largest possible stylus ball to avoid the interference of the stylus rod and the influence of the surface finish of the workpiece to be measured . • Minimize the stylus
as much as possible The connection point, because it will bring the potential to reduce the accuracy of the possibility of bending and offset
• The star stylus allows 5 stylus to be used at the same time, which is very convenient for measuring some features in the cavity, such as the annular groove in the hole.

 

In addition to the above conventional methods, the following three situations also need to be considered:

1. The accuracy level
of the measuring ball is to achieve high precision. Most measuring machines are provided with a level 5 measuring ball. When purchasing replacement parts, you should never choose a lower grade (grade 10) stylus, because this stylus usually causes a 15% loss in the overall accuracy of the machine. Relying on the stylus to save a small amount of money is a wrong saving, it will greatly damage the accuracy of your quality assurance system. 2. Stylus ball tip material

• Ruby 
 is a standard material in the industry. It has high hardness and wear resistance and can be used in most applications.

•Silicon nitride
is the material of choice for scanning aluminum parts because it can avoid the phenomenon of "adhesion and wear".

• Zirconia
is the choice when scanning cast iron parts, this material can avoid "adhesion wear.

 

 

3. Stylus shaft material
•steel
Most of the styli balls with a diameter greater than 2 mm and the styli with a length less than 30 mm use non-magnetic stainless steel rods. The steel rod has a good rigidity-to-weight ratio. This is the most common measuring rod material.
•Tungsten carbide
can provide good hardness when the diameter of the stylus ball is less than 1 mm or the length of the stylus exceeds 50 mm.
•Ceramics
When the diameter of the stylus ball is greater than 3 mm or the length of the stylus exceeds 30 mm, this material provides a choice of hardness equivalent to stainless steel but less weight than tungsten carbide.
• Carbon fiber (Renishaw GF)
is a specially developed carbon fiber that is not only light in weight, but also has good rigidity for a long time (up to 800 mm long on the SP80 scanning probe).
