The light directly hits the surface of the sample at a certain angle, and the reflected light is measured by a photoelectric sensor (reflectometer). According to the standard, the reflectance value of a black glass standard plate with a specific refractive index (usually: 1.567) is 100 gloss units. Reflectometers usually have multiple light source structures with different incident angles. The standard angles are 20º, 60º, 85º. According to the gloss level of the measured object. The reflectometer irradiates the product surface with direct light at different angles. The German Byk gloss meter instrument we supply is equipped with a standard measuring angle of 20º, 60º or 85º. These three angles are included in the mini three-angle gloss meter Byk4563.

Different measurement angles are used according to the following applications in different fields:
     ▪ The medium gloss surface uses a 60º measurement angle, and the measurement range is within the range of 10 to 70GU (gloss unit).
     ▪ For highly reflective surfaces that use 60º to measure more than 70GU, use a 20º measurement angle for measurement.
     ▪ For rough surfaces with a 60º measurement degree exceeding 10GU, 85º measurement angle measurement is required.

What is the gloss unit and definition?
The unit of gloss is called the "gloss unit", which is generally represented by a number or %. GU is GLOSS UNIT. Translated into Chinese: gloss unit. In China, it is sometimes said that 99GU and 190.8GU are the same. GU is not a unit of gloss, it is the abbreviation of GLOSS UNIT (gloss unit). Glossiness is a physical quantity that evaluates the ability of the surface of a material to reflect light under a set of geometrically prescribed conditions. Therefore, it expresses the reflective properties with direction selection. According to the characteristics of gloss, gloss can be divided into several categories. We usually say gloss refers to "mirror gloss", so gloss meter is sometimes called mirror gloss meter.

1. Insert the battery The battery of the
Byk gloss meter must be inserted into the instrument to operate. The instrument operation requires an AA 1.5 volt alkaline battery or 1.2 volt nickel-manganese rechargeable battery. According to the instructions on the battery label, each fully charged battery can measure up to 10,000 times. In order to ensure the continuous use of the instrument, it is recommended to prepare a spare battery, especially when measuring outdoors.
2.
Start the instrument and press the scroll wheel to start the instrument. The screen displays the system and the date of the last verification. If the instrument is started in the protective cover, it will automatically perform a self-diagnostic measurement. After that, the instrument enters the last selected measurement mode. Press the operation button to start the measurement. The measurement data is displayed at the bottom of the screen. The size of the digital display depends on the active statistics or difference mode and the number of angles measured. According to the selected measurement mode, the measured value is also displayed in the title bar.
3.
The glass standard plate fixed in the calibration protective cover is used for the calibration of the instrument. Putting the instrument in the protective cover can protect the optical measurement parts of the instrument and ensure that the standard board is on hand for backup. If you have multiple instruments of the same model, you must put the instruments in the protective cover corresponding to the serial number. It must be ensured that the standard board is clean and the surface is not scratched. When inserting the instrument into the protective cover, confirm that it is tightly locked.
4. Self-diagnosis
Any time the instrument is started in the protective cover, the instrument first performs self-diagnosis. During the check, any changes between the measured signal and the saved calibration data can be checked. This allows long-term calibrations, requiring only one calibration per week. In addition, if the climate changes significantly, the instrument still needs to be recalibrated. Sometimes, the system prompts you to recalibrate the instrument, possibly because the surrounding conditions have changed. Usually there is a small amount of dust left on the standard board after cleaning. Use a dry optical cleaning cloth when cleaning, this problem can be alleviated.
